Animal Tales - Tuesday January 10th 2006
Paddington
Paddington has featured in many books, cartoon strips, an animated TV series, a whole range of merchandising, and even had his own statue built at Paddington Station. Now you can get hold of one of the original illustrations by Peggy Fortnum taken from More About Paddington, published back in 1959.
The Enormous Crocodile
Roald Dahl dedicated The Enormous Crocodile to his granddaughter Sophie Dahl, now a famous supermodel. The Enormous Crocodile desires to lunch not with but on a nice, juicy child, which might not fare well with a supermodel’s diet.
The Tale of Jeremy Fisher
Frustrated fisherman Jeremy Fisher first appeared in 1905. Although not so lucky in the pond, he’s proved a firm favourite of Beatrix Potter’s characters. Anyone for roasted grasshopper with lady-bird sauce?
Kipper
Kipper’s creator Mick Inkpen is one of the most popular author/illustrators in the world, his stories have been translated into over twenty different languages and his books have sold over 4 million copies. Kipper, perhaps his most popular character of all, is now the star of his very own TV series.
Comic Adventures of Boots
This lovable but dopey feline gets up to all sorts of ridiculous mischief in philosophical tales with intriguing titles such as 'Operation Fish Biscuit,' and 'Pleased to Meet You, Madame Quark.
'The White Rabbit
The paranoid, clock watching White Rabbit has become an almost iconic figure since Alice followed him down the rabbit hole. The illustration of the White Rabbit here is by Helen Oxenbury, taken from the 1999 Walker Books edition of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
This unstoppable creature has helped to create one of the most popular children’s books ever published. The book follows the ravenous caterpillar's path as he eats his way through one apple on Monday, two pears on Tuesday, three plums on Wednesday… you know the rest.
MaisyMaisy first appeared in 1994, and was an instant hit with children and adults. Lucy Cousin’s lovable creation experiences the adventure of daily life with her friends Talullah, Eddie, Charley and Cyril. This illustration is from Maisy’s ABC, and sees the mouse decked out in fetching regal wear.
